African women have been subjected to various forms of violence and abuse including physical, sexual, and emotional violence, as well as female genital mutilation and trafficking. The rate of gender-based violence in sub-Saharan Africa is higher than the global average, with approximately 44% of African women, or more than two in five, having experienced gender-based violence.
